we had the opportunity to chat with emerging artist supermodel*. the project is artist & producer Frankie Beanie’s newest venture, bringing a fresh take on a 90s driven hip-hop sound. supermodel* EP was released on October 3rd and is now available on all streaming platforms.

the EP came out a few weeks ago & we are loving it. tell us, who is supermodel*?

supermodel* is a thing i invented to trick people in the industry to pay attention to me.

& now let’s break it down. who is supermodel* in three words?

truth, lies, third one

hearing “i used to live in england” on KCRW is how i found you, so i have to ask about your time in england. give us the details we can’t find in the song. 

honestly there’s not a lot that isn’t in the song, everything i say in it is real. i moved there when i was 18 and had a weird time.

be honest. england or la? tell us why. 

both for different reasons. england for nostalgia and fashion and dance music. la for iced coffee and the sun.

tell us about the recording process behind this first EP.  

i recorded the whole ep in my bedroom and just worked on it with my friends.

in which artists do you find your biggest inspiration? how do those artists shine through in your songs?

i’m definitely one to wear my influences on my sleeve so if you listen enough you can probably figure it out. when i was making the ep i was listening to a lot of lcd soundsystem, bowie, the first mf doom album. there’s an instagram post i did with all the original influences for supermodel*, i can’t remember them all right now.

& now give us the non-musical influences. people, cities, etc.?

virgil abloh, basquiat, andy warhol, new york. other things that make me sound pretentious.

what’s the best lyric you’ve ever written?

“maybe i’ve found myself, or it’s just another chapter of pretending i’m someone else” 

i don’t think i can say what’s “the best” but that’s one i’m proud of.

any final thoughts? facts the people should know about supermodel*?

i had a pumpkin spice latte yesterday and it was so fire.
